What is the pelvic floor?

The pelvic floor is composed of layers of muscles inside and outside the pelvis. These muscles support the pelvic organs, control the flow of urine, control bowel movements and assist in back support.

What Should I Expect?

Pelvic floor rehabilitation consists of numerous techniques to assist in the strengthening of the pelvic floor muscles. An internal examination will be performed to accurately determine a diagnosis and to assist in a successful treatment. Changes in diet and lifestyle may be helpful in relieving specific symptoms.

Why should I do pelvic floor exercises?

Regular pelvic floor exercises allow you to use the muscles more effectively andincrease support to the pelvic organs. A strong pelvic floor can prevent pelvic pain and associated conditions.

Who should see a pelvic floor physical therapist?

If you experience any of the following you may benefit from seeing this specialized healthcare professional:

  • Loss of bladder control when laughing, coughing or sneezing
  • Pain with intercourse
  • If you are constipated or unable to hold defecation
  • Have a strong urge to go to the washroom with running water or when you see a washroom
  • Have a pressure sensation in your pelvic area when standing
  • Difficultly urinating or the feeling that you “need to go” after urinating
  • If you are planning on becoming pregnant, pregnant or have just had a baby
  • After prostate surgery
  • If you have had a hysterectomy
  • A need to wear a panty liner for fear of leaking urine

Can’t I just do Kegel exercises?

These contractions are often very difficult to perform and can be executed incorrectly. A physical therapist will guide you in locating these muscles and provide instructions to ensure a successful outcome.

What is the first step for me to see a pelvic floor specialist?

Although a referral to see a pelvic floor physical therapist is not necessary, please discuss your options with your primary care physician. Please book an appointment and we would be glad to be part of your recovery.
